Project Description

Axis designed and installed external storage for the MacLean Electrical Group, a a global electrical distribution company, creating additional cable drum storage at their Aberdeen facility.

MacLean Electrical Group

MacLean Electrical Group specialises in the supply of electrical products, lighting systems and cables for harsh and hazardous environments across the world. Noskab is the specialist cable division of the MacLean Electrical Group and supplies cables for onshore and offshore projects, ensuring each job meets the appropriate international standards and client specification.

A growing business

Due to increased business demands, the Group embarked on an expansion programme for their Aberdeen facility. This purpose built site houses the largest inventory of specialised electrical products and cables for the demanding market and provides a rapid response service for the company’s extensive UK client base. MacLean Electrical asked Axis to design and create a bespoke solution that would allow for more external storage on site, moving more than 20% of the cable drums into a racking system and freeing up valuable yard space. The system was also needed quickly, which meant installation would take place at the site 500m from the North Sea in some of the harshest weather conditions.

Planning for the future

One of the reasons Axis had originally selected RediRack racking to be installed on-site at MacLean Electrical was its scalability. As the site grew and developed the racking could be reconfigured and moved to accommodate changing stock requirements without the need to buy a completely new system, which helped keep the project on budget.

A tailored solution

Ultimately, MacLean selected RediRack galvanised APR pallet racking for the site, complete with drum cradles. A galvanised finish was recommended by Axis as it doesn’t rust, a primary concern for the outdoor storage facility. Anti-collapse mesh was installed at the rear of the racking to protect operatives from potentially falling objects due to high winds. Cantilever racking was also installed at the same time as a means to store other products that were not suited to the pallet racking configuration, i.e. various lengths of electrical cable trays, the cantilever racking was also finished in a rust resistant galvanised finish.
